Do you have your birth certificate?

Birth certificates are the first step towards getting photo ID. It is really important that if you have one already, you keep it in a safe place and do not lose it. If you don't have your original birth certificate, you will need to apply for a new one. It costs $33 to get one sent to you.

Getting a New Zealand 18+ card

The 18+ card is one of the easiest forms of photo ID to get, however they are more expensive. It costs $20 for passport photos that you need to apply, and then $45 for the card itself. However, it is very useful to have, especially if you do not have a valid drivers license. To apply, you will need:

  1. A referee - This is someone who has known you for a year or more. They cannot be a relative, a spouse, a partner, or living at the same address as you. They must be over 20 years old.  They have a section in the 18+ application form that they must fill out, and they also need to have an 18+ card, a current passport, or divers licence to prove their identity. They will also need to sign and date the back of your passport photo to verify that it's you.

  2. A passport sized photo - Most post offices can take a photo for you when you apply ($20), but you can also have your photo taken at places like Warehouse Stationery ($15), or Kmart at The Palms ($5).

  3. Proof of address - This can be a bill or WINZ letter addressed to you at your address. If you don't have an address, you can change your mailing address to Work & Income to City Mission (275 Hereford St, Christchurch Central, Christchurch 8011). Once Work & Income have sent you mail, you can use this as your proof of address.

Once you have filled out the application form, take it to your nearest NZ Post shop, and it will be checked and processed. It will take around 2 weeks for this to be processed and sent to you. If you've been waiting for longer than this please call 04 381 9937, between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.
